Making lunch bag is not like so difficult that you need other's pattern unless, you just don't want to think how to make it...let's not do that...let's use our brain to make a simple lunch bag of our own...
What is lunch bag? what are you going to put into it? just a bread wrapped with plastic or paper or tissue? or tupperware lunch box with water bottle...when i design this lunch bag, my tupperware lunch box is in consideration...so, i make sure the high and the base size is enough for the lunch box...
After you figure out your lunch bag, then design it...break the design into the pattern. In this proccess, you will use your brain a lot...if the pattern is false made, then the rest can't be promised (^.^)...
Breaking the design into the pattern is not like super difficult. I believe, if you know what you want, you know what to do...just start from a simple design then...The design must be very clear in your head...the detail, everything...let's say you want to make a plain folder square bag...you want to add the sponge inside...what are you going to do? first: make the bag's bodice: square of course. Second: decide the string: will you make it or use the ready-for-use string?. Three: don't forget about the sponge...four: do you want your sponge is seen? if not, think about the linings...how will you attach it so it will look neat on the opening side of the bag?...you must think to this detail because it will make you decide WHAT cm or inches the measurement of all fabric and sponge...
Next, cut the fabric, etc...When you start to sew or assembly the fabric, you will more use your brain than before...if it's an easy pattern, that's easy, then, but if you want a complicated design, then assembling it will take more time...especially when your design is original by you, not available every where, so you won't have any reference to make it...you will do it your own way...my advice, even it's like a common design, try to make it your own way...you'll learn a lot rather than just doing exactly like reference book says...i always do this, and i learn a lot...at the same time, i remember how to do it...i usually do my own exercise and then look up the "answer" in my reference book...sometimes, i read them first and then try it on my own design...then i will find my flaws in my design or my technique modification...it's fun...if you really love sewing, you'll find it's fun...but if you just want to sell a bag, then it's not fun at all...
Designing and making your own pattern will make you appreciate other people's design and pattern...you will realize that to reach that level needs a sacrifice: time, cost, energy, thought, etc, etc, etc...sometimes, it will ruin your whole day if it's not finished as you expects...
Recently, i watch that some people sell a similar sew product...i knew it came from the same pattern...i just thought, the ready pattern is usually copyrighted and they just sell the result it like that?...i feel hurt a little bit...even though it's not my pattern but i feel it's very unfair for people like me who try to design and make pattern of sew product...belive me, if you think designing a cloth is more difficult, you are wrong...designing bag and wallet are sometimes as difficult as designing clothes...i remember that there is even a special course for designing bag in one web i found...it's italian web...just get one single idea, i can take a wholeeeee day (if not 2 days)...so, it's not easy...and after that, i must make the pattern...making some (not all) clothes patterns are easier because i have the very basic pattern, while making the bags and wallets patterns?...no way i have the basic pattern! EVERY DESIGN has it's own basic pattern! isn't that crazy...
Now, i would like to ask you to join me...let's make our own bag design and pattern...you'll be proud of yourself, i promise, if you can make it...you'll respect other's pattern and at the same time, you just want to improve yourself...you don't want other people better than you, do you? (^.^)...and the last thing you get, you will get your OWN style...
What i learn from Japanese zakka designers, that you don't have to think a sophisticated design to make a cute lunch bag...i've seen some simple shape of bags touched with creativity of the designers, the result? AMAZING!...very-very "the designer"'s style...i like seeing that kind of bags in the webstore but i LOVE it if i can design and make a bag of my own and i prefer the last one...
Well, happy sewing your lunch bag...
